Through her support group, Elizabeth Narumbe learned that kitchen gardening only requires a small plot of land and a small amount of time.
After being trained on growing and nurturing a kitchen garden and receiving the supplies needed to establish a garden, Elizabeth had all the motivation she needed to do just that.
Her garden now produces enough vegetables to feed her family and sell surplus in the market for a profit of about 1,200 Kenyan shillings (or $10) a week!
This extra income allows Elizabeth to make contributions to her support group’s voluntary savings, which in turn, allows her to borrow loans to invest in her garden and meet the other family and household needs as they arise.
“The kitchen garden has become a source of livelihood for my family. I am able to provide for my children without relying on my spouse. My husband now respects me because I contribute to the prosperity of our family. I thank God for Kiunga for empowering us and opening our eyes.”
