MARY'S STORY

Mary Naukot is the leader of the Kambi ya Juu support group. She has been an inspiration to many by sharing her story. Here, she shares it in her own words:

__

When I was diagnosed with HIV 10 years ago, I felt like the world was crashing down. I didn’t know what to do at that time or even who to share the sad story with because of fear of being stigmatized. It was very difficult for me, but I found strength in faith.

HIV is still a scary disease and he first step to fighting it is to start talking about it — that’s why I openly speak about my HIV status to help those who could be suffering silently because they do not have anyone to tell.

I go to people and share about how I felt when I was diagnosed with HIV and how I got out of it. I have turned my weakness into strength by telling people that there’s HIV and that the disease is manageable. I’m showing people that this disease won’t kill you and that you can live a long and healthy life.

I know the challenges and the anxieties of living with the virus and finding someone to love you but thanks to God for we have the ARVs.

It’s my responsibility to go out and tell people to get tested and know their status. If you are HIV positive, start medication, disclose to your loved ones, get into a support group, and fight the stigma around the disease. We can live a normal, healthy life if we accept our status and seek support from the health care providers.
