EVANS MUTWIRI

Since losing his parents to HIV-related illness two years ago, Evans Mutwiri, 15 years old, has been unwell and living with his aunty in Isiolo.

He had been to various hospitals to seek medical attention, but his condition continued to worsen. Finally, when he visited Isiolo County Hospital, he met Catherine. Catherine is a community health volunteer (CHV) for Kiunga, who is stationed at the hospital.

Catherine immediately recommended that Evans take an HIV test. Due to a shortage of test kits, Evans was referred to another hospital, where he was confirmed to be positive for HIV.

Once the test was confirmed, Evans began counseling sessions and was enrolled in care and treatment back in Isiolo, where the medical social worker was able to engage Evans and ensure he was correctly taking his medication.

Just two weeks after starting treatment, Evans’s health began to improve and he gained more than 10 pounds! He and his aunty are both extremely grateful to Catherine, for her sound advice, and to Kiunga for stationing her at the hospital, where she could readily intervene and assist!
