Mary Kamami is married and blessed with 3 children. When she became pregnant with her youngest daughter, Mercy, a couple of years ago, she learned that she was HIV-positive.
Based on what she had seen and heard about HIV, Mary was afraid. She says, “The reality of my condition hit me very hard. I felt very helpless and bitterness filled my heart.”
While her new reality was hard to accept, when she returned to the hospital for her next appointment, she met Catherine, one of our support group leaders who is stationed at the hospital.
Catherine began talking to Mary about her own status, linked her to a support group in her community, and continued to follow up with and encourage Mary until she delivered baby Mercy in the hospital.
The remarkable impact is best described in Mary’s own words:
“I believe Catherine was a godsend to me. She revealed her HIV status to me and encouraged me to take medication as directed by the doctors!
“Now, thanks to Kiunga, I have more energy and my health is stable. If it were not for Catherine and my support group, I would not be alive today.”
