WORLD AIDS DAY IN ISIOLO
IT HAS BEEN 40 YEARS…
since the first cases of AIDS were reported and HIV is still a global threat. While significant progress has been made in these 40 years, important global targets for 2020 were missed and targets to end AIDS by 2030 are at risk, in large part due to structural inequalities that prevent people living with HIV from accessing prevention and treatment.
Each year, on December 1, the global community commemorates World AIDS Day by honoring the more than 36 million people who have died from AIDS-related illness, showing support for those living with HIV today and uniting in the fight against HIV. This year, the theme of World AIDS Day is “End Inequalities. End AIDS.”
Kiunga will join in these efforts by taking part in the World AIDS Day event being planned by Kenya’s National AIDS and STIs Control Programme (NASCOP). Kiunga is making it possible for six HIV experts from the Ministry of Health to be present for the day-long event in Isiolo County to provide testing and counseling services.
In addition, as the only organization currently providing HIV services at the community level, Kiunga will bring representatives from our support groups to the event. Throughout the day, the support group leaders and members in attendance will have the opportunity to express themselves to the public and the government. Not only is this a special opportunity for these representatives, but by sharing their stories of hope and demonstrating that they are able to live positively with HIV, they will help to minimize stigma and discrimination in the community.
Commemorate World AIDS Day by helping us to do our part to End Inequalities. End AIDS.
