Friendly care support group buys 110 pullets
Kiunga project officer mbae leon…
trains support groups on the concept of voluntary savings and loaning. As they are able, support group members contribute to the group savings each week. The money that is saved up can either be loaned out to individual group members to help meet immediate financial needs or to invest in small business expenses, or the groups can pool their savings to make an agreed-upon purchase that will serve the entire group.
Project Officer Leon also arranges for different experts from the Government of Kenya to attend support groups to provide specialized training on topics ranging from the importance of adhering to HIV medication to maintaining good nutrition and proper hygiene to growing sustainable kitchen gardens and rearing livestock.
After one such training with a livestock production officer during which they learned about good poultry production practices, Friendly Care Support Group was inspired to pool their resources to save up to buy pullets (young hens) for all of the group members.
By contributing what amounts to an average of $0.25 per week per group member, Friendly Care Support Group was able to save over $500! With their savings, they purchased 5 pullets for each of the 22 group members.
The members are excited that they can now provide their families with access to eggs, which will improve their health and nutrition, and that they have the opportunity to earn additional income for their families by selling their surplus eggs in the market.
Your gifts provide support groups with access to life-impacting resources and education.
