A few months ago, a friend noticed a change in Purity Mwanjiru’s health and introduced her to Zhalo Ali, a local community health volunteer. Zhalo took her to the hospital for counseling and an HIV test.
Purity says, “I was sick and felt so weak. I didn’t know what the problem was until Zhalo counseled me and encouraged me to take the HIV test. The test turned positive and I was put on ARVs and my health is improving now. Zhalo not only introduced me to treatment, but also connected me to the support group, where I found caring people.”
Zhalo and the other members have supported Purity’s recovery, and even helped her disclose her status to her husband. She is very optimistic that he will join the support group soon too.
Purity feels that being a part of the group has helped her cope with her situation. She says, “Without the support I have received from the group, I don’t know how my life could have been. I am grateful to Kiunga, too, for their continued support.”
