AGATA NTHIGA

When Agata Nthiga contracted HIV in 2010 it took her some time to accept the situation. At first she was in denial and could not imagine how she got the virus. When she went for a confirmatory test, the results proved she was HIV-positive, so she leaned on a community health volunteer (CHV) who supported her during that time of absolute need.

Agata says that had it not been for the volunteer who stood with her during that challenging moment, she might not have made it. Looking back on that time, Agata made a decision to dedicate herself to helping people in the same situation by becoming a CHV herself.

She wanted to make a positive impact in her community and knew she could do that by helping to improve the links between the health care facilities and the community, bringing defaulters back to treatment, and offering emotional support to patients and their families.

Since Kiunga began HIV work in Isiolo in September, Agata has traced three clients who had defaulted from treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic, and linked them back to a nearby health facility where they are receiving HIV care once again.

By leading a support group that provides training on health, hygiene, nutrition and income generating activities, Agata is ensuring that people living with HIV are living fruitful lives. And she believes this is the very best way to give back to the community. She finds value and gratification in knowing that she is creating an impact in people’s lives.
