Kiunga: A cost-effective and socially inclusive intervention for HIV/AIDS
April 2021
Kiunga has now been successfully operating for 7 months. We have 18 support groups meeting every week, reaching over 360 people. This represents more than 10 percent of the total HIV population in Isiolo County, Kenya, and is making a tremendous impact not only on the support group members, but on their entire households as well.
To improve the link between the community and the local health care facilities, Kiunga Project Officer Mbae Leon regularly meets with hospital officials. During a recent meeting with the Isiolo hospital management team, Mr. Matoye, who oversees the comprehensive care clinic, said:
“Kiunga, Inc. has the most cost-effective and socially inclusive interventions that are directly helping in the prevention and management of HIV and AIDS.”
Mr. Matoye went on to express his gratitude for Kiunga’s efforts to support behavior change at the community level and to provide tools that empower individuals to take charge of their own health.
These efforts all start with support groups, and are only possible because of your generosity and belief in this work. We hope you are as encouraged by Mr. Matoye’s feedback and the following stories as we are!
Gratefully,
Erin Todd
President, Kiunga, Inc.
